Moving From Spain to Ireland: The Essential Guide for Spanish Citizens (2025)

Relocating from Spain to Ireland is more common than ever, especially among students, professionals in tech and finance, and people looking for an English-speaking country with strong job opportunities. But moving countries isn’t only about buying a flight and finding an apartment. To avoid future tax problems, bureaucratic headaches, or difficulties renewing documents, it’s essential to follow a few key administrative steps.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through the 4 critical procedures every Spaniard must understand when moving to Ireland:

  1. Registering with the Spanish Embassy in Ireland
  2. Filing Model 030 (“Modelo 030”) with the Agencia Tributaria
  3. Changing your Spanish tax residency
  4. Updating your DNI address

Plus, some extra tips to ensure you’re fully covered in both Spain and Ireland.

Let’s dive in.

1. Registering With the Spanish Embassy in Ireland

Although not strictly mandatory, registering with the Spanish Embassy in Dublin is highly recommended for anyone who plans to live in Ireland for more than a few months.

Why register?

Because it provides you with:

  • Access to consular services
  • Ability to renew your passport or DNI while abroad
  • The right to vote from overseas (CERA or ERTA register)
  • Official proof that you reside in Ireland—useful for tax or legal matters
  • Emergency assistance if needed

How to register

The process is straightforward:

  1. Visit the Spanish Embassy in Dublin https://www.exteriores.gob.es/Embajadas/dublin/es/Paginas/index.aspx
  2. Complete the Consular Registration Form (Alta Consular).
  3. Provide documents:
    • Passport or DNI
    • Irish address proof (rental agreement, utility bill, employer letter, bank statement, etc.)
    • Ireland’s PPS Number, if you already have it (optional but useful)

You can register as:

2. Filing Model 030 (“Modelo 030”) With Hacienda

This is one of the least known but most crucial steps. Changing your fiscal address in Spain requires submitting Modelo 030 to the Agencia Tributaria (Hacienda).

What is Model 030 for?

Model 030 is used to notify Hacienda about:

  • A change of tax address
  • A change of tax residency (from Spain to abroad)
  • Updates to personal information

Think of it as the document that tells Spain: “I no longer live in Spain; please update your records.”

How to file Model 030 from Ireland

You have two options:

Option 1 — Online (recommended)

You need:

  • Digital certificate
  • DNIe
  • Cl@ve system

If you still have your Spanish digital certificate installed, filing online takes minutes.

Option 2 — In-person or by mail

If you don’t have a digital certificate, you can:

  • Send Model 030 by postal mail to your nearest Agencia Tributaria office
  • Deliver it on your next trip to Spain
  • Use a representative (gestoría or legal representative)

What to put in the form?

  • Your new Irish address
  • Your identification details
  • Any updated contact information

Important: Submitting Model 030 does NOT automatically remove your tax residency in Spain. It simply updates your address. The actual tax-residency change is a different process (explained below).

Still, you should always submit Model 030 as soon as you move.

3. Changing Your Fiscal Residency: Spain → Ireland

This is where things get serious—and where many people get into trouble if done incorrectly.

When do you stop being a tax resident in Spain?

Under Spanish law, you are a tax resident if:

  • You spend more than 183 days per year in Spain, OR
  • Your “center of economic interests” is in Spain.

To become an Irish tax resident, you typically need:

  • 183+ days in Ireland in a calendar year, OR
  • 280+ combined days over two years (min 30 days each year)

What you must do to change your tax residency

  1. Stop residing more than 183 days in Spain Keep flight tickets, rental contracts, bank statements—these are proof of your physical stay abroad.
  2. Become tax resident in Ireland You do this naturally by living and working in Ireland. You’ll start filing Irish income tax returns.
  3. Notify Spain by filing:
    • IRPF as a non-resident next year, using Modelo 210 (if you still own property in Spain)
    • Optional: Modelo 030 (already covered), which updates your address

Spain does not have an official document where they “approve” your change of residency. Instead, your residency is determined by facts—where you live, work, and pay taxes.

If Hacienda doubts your situation, they might request:

  • Irish P60 or payslips
  • Irish tax returns
  • Irish rental contract
  • Embassy registration
  • Irish bank accounts

This is why doing all steps listed in this article is essential: it builds evidence.

Exit Tax Warning

If you hold more than €4 million in stocks or business assets, Spain may apply the Exit Tax (Modelo 720-related). Most people don’t meet the threshold, but it’s good to know.

Extra Tips When Moving From Spain to Ireland

1. Get your PPS Number early

You need it for work, healthcare, and benefits. In Ireland, nothing moves without a PPS.

2. Inform your Spanish bank

Some banks block online activity when they detect foreign logins unless you inform them.

3. Consider health coverage

Ireland does not have the same universal coverage as Spain. Many Spanish expats take private insurance.

4. Check if you must file Modelo 720

Only if you remain a tax resident in Spain while holding foreign assets. If you’re now Irish resident, it usually doesn’t apply.
